9 December 2014 – On Sunday 30 November 2014 the Comboni Family and the Church that is in Harar Apostolic Vicariate rejoiced for the priestly ordination of one of their sons, Fr Ketema (Hailegiorgis) Dagne Tadesse. The beautiful celebration, witnessed by a good participation of people, of priests and of religious men and women, was held, not in Ketema’s village, but in the main Catholic centre of the area, in the city of Asebe Teferi, in order to allow the participation and accommodation of the many participants coming from all over Ethiopia.

Besides, Asebe Teferi is the town, where the young Ketema attended his Secondary School. We enjoyed the hospitality of the local community of diocesan priests, running the parishes of the area, the warm welcoming of Mgr. Woldetensae, Apostolic Vicar of Harar, who presided over the ordination and the cordiality of the community of the Sisters of “Franciscan Missionaries of St Mary of the Angels”, who are present with the school, a dispensary and work of women promotion.
Also the participation of the Capuchin Friars was impressive, since they were the founders of the mission and only recently did they leave their convent and the parish in the hands of the diocesan clergy.
The celebration in the Ethiopian Rite started at 8.00 a.m. with a solemn procession from the priests’ house to the recently-built Church dedicated to St George, accompanied by many young men and women of the parish choir singing.
We thank the Lord for the gift of a new missionary priest and also for the generosity of Fr Ketema’s parents who have allowed him to become a Catholic priest.
Fr Ketema, or better Hailegiorgis – according to his baptismal name – have already experienced the hardships of the Comboni mission in South Sudan, where he spent more than two years during his missionary service. In particular way, he worked in the mission of Old Fangak among the Nuer.
To witness this missionary tie with the land of Comboni, besides the Ethiopian Provincial, Fr Julio, also the Provincial Superior of South Sudan, Fr Daniele Moschetti, was present.
Soon after the ordination, Fr Ketema will exercise his apostolic ministry among the Guji people in Ethiopia, giving a hand also to the evangelisation in his own country.
